JOB OBJECTIVE: Under general supervision, is responsible for performing skilled and specialized inspection work involving advance technical environmental health work in the area of inspections of private, public, and commercial property for environmental health hazards and to ensure compliance with government regulations regarding health, sanitation control and the handling of storage of consumable items. This position requires routine reports and that must be maintained. The position assists in the working towards resolution of the health hazards, public safety and property protection. The incumbent has daily contact with the public which requires the exercise of tact and diplomacy. There are no supervisory responsibilities with this position. Individual will be assigned other duties as needed by the supervisor or director.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Inspects all types of food establishments and discusses adverse findings with the business’ supervisors.
  2. Inspect the sanitary conditions of restaurants, hotels, schools, hospitals and other public facilities; record daily tasks and results of inspections.
  3. Investigate health and safety related complaints.
  4. Conduct inspections to ensure that equipment, materials and product processes do not present a safety or health hazard to employees or the general public.
  5. Initiate enforcement procedures to fine or close an establishment contravening municipal, state or federal regulations.
  6. Provide consultation and deliver training programs on issues of public health, environmental protection of workplace safety.
  7. Schedules, conducts and coordinate food handler classes/training as needed.
  8. Attends various meetings involving departments, public or property owners.
  9. Attend and assists in building plan review of proposed new food establishments.
  10. Work with various electronic testing equipment.
  11. Prepares a monthly report of activities.
  12. Performs other duties assigned by immediate supervisor and/or department director when needed.

EQUIPMENT/MATERIAL: Personal computer, computer software, printer, mouse, scanner, City vehicle, copy machine,10 key calculator, typewriter, keyboard, tape recorder, telephone, cell phone, two-way radio, thermometer, video camera, digital camera, city vehicle, Code of Ordinances and policy & procedure handbook.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Works normal office working hours; 5-day, 40-hour week, with occasional work on weekends and after hours as required. Works indoors in a well-lighted, air-conditioned office and outdoors to conduct inspections to ensure compliance with Health Codes. The job has some significant hazards and the physical demands are moderate. Position is exposed to unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards which may result to exposure to soiling of clothing and skin and working near mechanical parts.  Must be able to lift, push and pull approximately 20 lbs. and be able to walk on uneven terrain.,

EDUCATION/SKILLS REQUIRED: Requires a High School Diploma with a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a related field.  Must have a Food Management Certification.  Must have excellent grammar, writing, communication and organizational skills, good filing skills, be able to accurately type a minimum of 30 wpm, possess conflict management skills, decision-making abilities, maintain high level of confidentiality and have excellent public relations/customer service skills. Must be bilingual (English and Spanish). Must be computer literate and proficient in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  Must be able to read and interpret ordinances, information and documents; use math and mathematical reasoning, work on multiple deadlines and concurrent tasks. Must have a neat and professional appearance.  Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.  Preferred Qualifications:  Experience as a Health Environmental Specialist or similar.
