JOB OBJECTIVES:Under the general direction and supervision of the Municipal Court Judge and Court Administrator. Receives legal documents to be served from the municipal court judge and court in a prompt and responsible manner. Serves court orders and processes summonses and subpoenas. Locates individuals to be served by using directories, state, county and city records such as public utility records and records date, time, and place of delivery/arrest/serving a warrant. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Serve all process or documents issued by the municipal court, in accordance with all applicable laws.
- Arrests individuals with outstanding warrants.
- Knowledge of the City of San Juan and ability to locate specific addresses in a prompt manner.
- Handle and safeguard information and documents obtained from the court or attorney(ies) in a confidential manner.
- Reports to the municipal judge or court administrator, as required to obtain documents to be served.
- Maintain original warrant files in order.
- Restrain, controls and handcuff persons who resist arrest.
- Transports arrested individuals to city jail facility and place them in jail.
- Makes arrangements for payment of fines and releases prisoners when payment cannot be made.
- Maintains accurate records (daily logs) on documents served and arrest(s) made to include, date, time, and place.
- Records why documents and/or arrest was not made.
- Maintains required usage and mileage logs on city owned vehicle driven.
- Communicates to individuals appropriate court policies and procedures relative to the document served.
- Maintains order, decorum, and security during court proceedings.
- Will serve as the liaison to the San Juan Police Department.
- Will be responsible for picking up and delivering necessary forms from the Police Department for Court Magistrates.
- Will be responsible in making necessary corrections to Magistrate Forms.
- Will perform other appropriate duties as required.
EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS:Considerable skill in the use of firearms; two-way radio, computer, phone, and other general office equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Good physical condition. Considerable knowledge of the principals and practices and procedures of police work; all laws and ordinances governing police work; emergency first aid procedures. Considerable ability to understand and carry out moderately complex oral and written instructions; prepare clear and comprehensive written reports; supervise police personnel and departmental activities; deal courteously but firmly with the general public; act quickly and calmly in emergency situations; be dependable; use good judgment; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other police agencies, fellow employees, municipal officials and the general public.
EDUCATION/SKILLS REQUIRED:Requires a High School diploma and completion of one year of college. Must have of a valid Texas Driver’s License and Basic TCOLE Certification License. Requires excellent grammar and communications skill. Must be bilingual English/Spanish. Prefer for individual to be computer literate and proficient in MSWord and Excel. Employees in this class are delegated the authority necessary for the performance of assigned duties, within restrictions of departmental policies.
