JOB OBJECTIVE:
Requires a working knowledge of Library programs and procedures. Individual is responsible for performing basic functions of and will assist in overseeing and controlling the services of Reference/Circulation, Children’s, Adults, Cataloging and Technical Services as assigned. Responsible in assisting library patrons with all library transactions to ensure that outstanding customer service is delivered. This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Assists library patrons with any and all library functions to include cash handling, checking in/out items working with library equipment, processing holds, issuing library cards, collection of fines, shelving library materials, etc.
- Enter and update patrons’ records on computer.
- Provide assistance to patrons by locating materials and helping complete special projects.
- Processes overdue and damaged materials.
- Assists with cataloging materials.
- Releases print-outs and collects amount due.
- Answer’s telephone and gives information to callers, take messages, or transfers call to appropriate individual.
- Maintains area in an orderly fashion and shelves books, magazines, etc. accordingly.
- Assists in coordinating programs and special events with/for community outreach programs/agencies.
- Will assist with computer troubleshooting and basic maintenance.
- Assists in overseeing volunteers and provide them with the necessary support.
- Prepares and maintains periodic statistical reports, work programs and other related administrative tasks.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
EQUIPMENT / MATERIAL:
Computer and general office equipment, as well as referenced materials and on-line reference tools.
WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Individual works indoors in a well-lighted air-conditioned building. Able to correctly lift and exert up to 50 pounds of force, bend body downward and forward, raise objects from a lower to higher position, shift objects horizontally and vertically, be in constant movement, stand for sustained periods of time, and able to use hands in part or whole. The job has no significant hazards and physical demands are medium. Individual will work some evenings and weekends.
EDUCATION / SKILLS REQUIRED:
Requires a High School Diploma with a minimum of two (2) years library experience. Other specialized job requirements include strong organizational and interpersonal skills, and customer service skills, must have excellent communication and grammar skills to be able to communicate effectively with the general public. Must be computer literate and proficient in Excel, MSWord and be bilingual English and Spanish). Must have a valid Texas Driver’s License (Class C) with a satisfactory driving record.
